When you say the word 'nightmare' the first thing that comes to mind is scary. Well, for most people at least. In my case, if you ask me, I would say snakes.
When I was younger my Mom would play the same CD every night, it was a lullaby CD, meant to put me to sleep. It ended up having the complete opposite effect.
Every night I would lie down to go to sleep, and my Mom would turn on the CD. It was a Toby Mac CD. The one song that I remember was called 'Irene.' It's meant to be a lullaby. The song tells the story of a young girl, who has a baby, and it's pretty much talking about how the Lord will take care of them, and that he promises he's always watching. Anyways, I would fall asleep and every single night I would have the same nightmare.
Me and my sister Keera are playing barbies in her room on a sunny day, when suddenly skinny little neon green gardener snakes start crawling under the door, into the room. They soon start pouring in through the windows and through cracks in the floor, and through the closet doors. Keera and I start screaming for help, but one of the snakes jumps into her mouth (apparently they're jumping snakes now too) and suddenly all of the other snakes are following it into Keera's mouth. I get so frightened that I run out of the room and onto the front yard to be with the rest of my family. The last thing I saw in the room was snakes crawling in and out of every hole on Keera's tiny little head. Me and the rest of my family sit, sobbing, on the front lawn and the last thing I hear before I wake up is Keera screaming "Help me!" Her voice, barely audible, because of the number of snakes in her mouth...
Pretty messed up dream, I know! I had that dream for a good couple years, and I always woke up sobbing. I got used to the dream as I got older, but it still wouldn't go away. I'm not sure what got ride of the horrible nightmare, but I do have a good idea of what caused it.
It took me a while to find the name of the song, I started searching for it last year, and found it only 5 or 6 months ago. But when I found the song on Youtube, I listened to the song with the lyrics on the screen, and a specific line from the song caught my attention,
"Just cast your cares, and please beware of snakes, they come in all shapes and sizes, tempt you, put scales on your eyelids."
Is it just me or does that lyric seem to have some sort of relevance to my childhood nightmare? Now that I've grown up (somewhat) I realize the meaning to this song, and the snakes are being used as a personification. They are representing people... bad people. The song doesn't scare me anymore and I actually enjoy listening to it :) My sisters find it funny that this song gave me nightmares, and they listen to it all the time too.
I suggest you give the song a listen. (links below)
You can listen to the song with lyrics on-screen here.
Or you can listen to it while enjoying the official music video here.
Anyways, I hope you enjoyed hearing about one of my childhood memories. Oh, one more thing, ever since this dream, I've had a SEVERE fear of snakes!
This is almost exactly what they looked like in my dream, just not as detailed. |
